From Code to Cues: Learning to Start Over

 By Dilan Patel

I spent three and a half years studying computer science at a community college in Santa Monica, CA. Somewhere along the way, life threw me curveballs — school, money, burnout — but all of that eventually pointed me toward what really moves me: music.

Right now, I’m still early in the journey — a bedroom DJ, a wedding assistant, helping out at raves like Reform and Work here in Los Angeles. I’m learning what it actually takes to build from the ground up — setting up decks, running cables, watching how real DJs move crowds.

Transitioning from code to cues hasn’t been easy — mentally, physically, or emotionally. But it’s teaching me more about discipline, patience, and creativity than any classroom ever did.

Three things keep me grounded: competency, support, and association.

🧩 Competency

Every new mix is a test. Every mistake humbles you. But that’s the process — growth through repetition and refinement.

I’ve learned not to judge my early attempts too hard. You can’t expect perfection when you’re still learning the fundamentals. “Good enough to build on” is the mantra. Once the basics become muscle memory, taste and style start to take shape.

Competency isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being present, learning with intention, and staying consistent long enough to improve.

🫂 Support System

In the beginning, it was one person saying, “You’d be good at this.” Then a few friends started showing up to house sets, or asking me to help run sound. Now I’ve got a small network of people — other DJs, organizers, and techs — who keep me in the loop and push me forward.

Support doesn’t always mean someone handing you opportunities. Sometimes it’s someone giving you a chance to learn, or just reminding you that progress counts even when it’s slow.

You can’t build in isolation. Community keeps you accountable — and inspired.

🔗 Talent Is Association

The more I’m around the scene, the more I see how talent spreads through connection.

When you’re surrounded by people who are genuinely passionate — from sound engineers to promoters to DJs pushing creative boundaries — that energy rubs off on you. You start learning faster, thinking sharper, and dreaming bigger.

Talent grows through association. The right people don’t just inspire you — they raise your standards.

💭 Closing Thoughts

From computer labs to rave floors, this journey is still unfolding. But every set I help with, every mix I practice, every lesson I learn brings me a little closer to where I want to be.

Competency gives me focus.

Support gives me strength.

Association gives me direction.

Success isn’t a destination — it’s a rhythm you grow into. For now, I’m just staying in the mix — one gig, one night, one track at a time.
